- *Boots* is a dramedy about a closeted teenager who enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1990s.

- The Netflix series was inspired by *The Pink Marine, *a memoir by Greg Cope White.

- *Boots *premiered on Netflix on Oct. 9, 2025.

Military depictions in film and TV tend to be intense, but Netflix's new series *Boots *offers something a little different.

Created by Andy Parker (*Tales of the City*), the heartfelt dramedy follows Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer), a closeted teenager who enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps in the early 1990s, when being openly gay in the military was illegal.

While *Boots *draws from real figures, viewers may wonder whether the story itself is based on true events. With the show now streaming, here's everything you need to know about its real-life inspiration.

What is *Boots *about?

*Boots *begins in 1990, when Cameron decides to join the Marines with his best friend, Ray McAffey (Liam Oh). For Cameron, joining the military is a way to escape his dull routine — and his chaotic mother, Barbara (Vera Farmiga) — while he tries to figure out his place in the world.

But what he doesn't realize is just how grueling his life is about to become, especially at a time when being gay is banned across all branches of the military.

Per the logline, the series follows Cameron, Ray, and their fellow recruits as they move through "the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits."

Yes, *Boots *takes its inspiration from former Marine Greg Cope White's memoir *The Pink Marine*. As a gay teen, White followed his straight best friend into what he thought would be a fun summer camp, only to endure something much more challenging.

While the series draws from Cope White's experience, *Boots *isn't a direct retelling of his life. "The show is not a biopic," Cope White, who serves as a writer on the series, explained in a recent interview. "Our showrunner opened it up to explore the entire platoon — many characters from the book, some newly created. Cameron Cope and Ray McAffey are based on me and Dale, but we also take them to places I never did."

Parker, the creator, told the *New York Times* that he personally connected with *The Pink Marine*, as he also grew up as a closeted teen and considered joining the Marines. His connection to the source material became the heart of the adaptation, though he took a few creative liberties, including shifting the setting from 1979 to 1990.

Despite the changes, one key aspect of *The Pink Marine *that carries into *Boots *is the genuine, platonic love between a gay recruit and his straight best friend.

Cope White, per his website, risked everything when he joined the Marines as a scrawny, secretly gay teen. He even lied about his sexuality on his enlistment papers, something that could have cost him his career. But he went on to serve six years and earned the rank of sergeant.

After receiving an honorable discharge at the age of 26, he lived in New York City briefly before heading to Los Angeles to pursue a screenwriting career. After a few decades writing for TV, he began writing* The Pink Marine*, which was published in 2015.**
