- Rachel Dratch scolded Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz for laughing while rehearsing the original Debbie Downer sketch on *Saturday Night Live*.
- The comedian eventually flubbed a line and broke into laughter while performing the sketch on live TV.
- "I guess I was so nervous. And then we all started laughing," Dratch recalled.
Rachel Dratch scolded her *Saturday Night Live* costars for laughing as they rehearsed the original Debbie Downer sketch — then ended up breaking while she performed the segment on live TV.
The *Wine Country* actress, who performed on *SNL* for seven seasons from 1999 to 2006, recalled the origins of her profusely pessimistic character during an interview with her former castmate Amy Poehler on *Good Hang*.
"At read-through, it killed," Dratch said of the original Debbie Downer sketch, which aired in a 2004 episode hosted by Lindsay Lohan. "But then, you never know, 'cause sometimes something can kill at the table [and bomb on TV]."

Dratch said that Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz, who both appeared in the sketch in supporting roles, repeatedly burst into laughter while rehearsing before the live show.
"When we were in dress rehearsal, Jimmy and Horatio were kinda laughing," she remembered. "And I was thinking, 'You guys, I feel like this could work! Keep it together, guys.'"
Dratch ultimately ate her words when she broke into giggles herself while performing the sketch on live TV. "Then on air, I just flubbed one of the lines," she said. "I don't even know. I guess I was so nervous. And then we all started laughing."

Rachel Dratch revives 'SNL' icon Debbie Downer for 'Real Housewives' spoof

The line in question came about two minutes into the sketch, when Dratch joked, "Did you guys hear about that train explosion in North Korea? Media's so sensitive there," before correcting herself to say the intended line, "so secretive." After a long pause, she continued the line: "...that we may never know how many people perished." She then laughed again and had to turn away from the camera to hide her reaction.
Dratch's gaffe also caused Fallon to unsuccessfully stifle chuckles, and also made Poehler smile and brought Sanz to tears (of laughter), which he wiped away with his shirt at one point in the sketch. Dratch also continued to giggle through lines for the rest of the sketch, and her occasional pauses to get her bearings were met with joyous applause from the *SNL* audience.

Debbie Downer, whose unrivaled ability to derail conversations with uncomfortable negativity, quickly became Dratch's most beloved *SNL* character. She reprised the role three times in the next season, and three additional times during her final season, with Lohan returning for the final sketch during Dratch's tenure as a cast member.

Dratch later brought Debbie Downer back to *SNL* during a 2010 episode hosted by Betty White, as well as in an episode hosted by Daniel Craig in 2020 (which happened to be the show's last in-studio ep before switching to remote productions during the pandemic). She also reprised the role during *SNL50: The Anniversary Special *in February.
