Mick Cronin urges allowing schools to exceed the $20.5M revenue-sharing cap to retain players

LOS ANGELES (AP) — March Madness is looming. So iscollege basketball's transfer portal, and that worries Mick Cronin.

The Division I men's portal opens for a 15-day window on April 7, a day after a new national champion is crowned in Indianapolis. This shortest window for entry yet follows a rule change this year to better align with the end of the season.

"We should do everything we can to stop these kids from transferring too much because nobody is going to graduate," the UCLA coach said Tuesday night afterUCLA beat No. 9 Nebraska. "These kids aren't going to have the grades if they're transferring three or four times, so we got to do everything we can."

Cronin is advocating for schools to be able to exceed the roughly $20.5 million revenue-sharing cap per school that began this season in order to retain their players.

"I know there's people at the Big Ten office that are for it, that's why I bring it up," Cronin said. "I told them I would back them."

Most schools are doling out the biggest share of the revenue pie to football players and giving whatever's left to basketball players. Schools are allowed to share up to $20.5 million with their players, but there still exists an option to provide third-party deals outside the school-to-player payments for name, image and likeness.

"You should be able to go over the revenue share to be able to retain players," Cronin said. "Very few of these guys are going to be able to retire on (NIL money), so we need to encourage guys not to transfer."

The transfer portal allows any player to find a new school every offseason.Chad Baker-Mazarawas on his fifth school at age 26 before he parted ways with Southern California's program last weekend.

"If you're on your third school, they're not going to pay for you to come back when you're 25. You only went here for a year," Cronin said. "They're all going to be left in the dust."

Teams attempt to combat the transfer frenzy by having recruits sign multiyear NIL deals, but even then there are workarounds.

Cronin has worked the portal effectively in recent years, adding Donovan Dent and Johnny Juzang. But he also lost Aday Mara to Michigan, Dylan Andrews to Boise State and Berke Buyuktuncel to Nebraska.

"Berke's had a great year for them. I love Berke," he said. "He's found a great fit, he's in a great system for him."

Cronin said he receives calls from former players looking for help finding jobs.

"Guys need jobs when they're 27 and they're done playing in Europe," he said. "They have no resume because they've been playing basketball."

US Rep. Tony Gonzales and conservative activist Brandon Herrera will advance to a runoff in the Republican primary for Texas' 23rd District, CNN's Decision Desk projects, prolonging a contentious campaign in which Gonzales denied allegations that he had an affair with a former staffer who died by suicide.

It's a rematch from two years ago, when Gonzales beat Herrera in a runoff by just 354 votes out of nearly 30,000. But this time, the campaign was upended by theallegationsGonzales had an affair with Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, the former staffer, who died in September. A county medical examiner ruled that she died of self-immolation and listed her manner of death as suicide.

The controversy gained traction in the final weeks before the primary amid a pressure campaign from Herrera and new revelations from Adrian Aviles, the husband of the late staffer.

Text messages provided to CNN by Adrian Aviles show that Gonzales sent lewd messages to Santos-Aviles, including one exchange asking for a "sexy pic." In aninterviewwith CNN's Erin Burnett last week, Aviles called the congressman a "predator" and said that "he's continued to lie to the American people, his constituents."

He facesmounting callsfrom some of his GOP colleagues to step down. "A male harassing a female employee, I just can't stomach it, dude. I've got a wife and a daughter. He needs to go," Tennessee Rep. Tim BurchetttoldCNN's Manu Raju.

Gonzales has said he won't resign.

"There will be an opportunity for all the details and facts to come out," hetold CNNlast week. "What you've seen is not all the facts. And there will be ample time for all of that to come out."

He accused Adrian Aviles and his attorney of blackmailing him, claims the attorney, Bobby Barrera, denied.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has also so fardeclinedto back calls for Gonzales' resignation, though he conceded the accusations were "very serious" and said that he has urged the San Antonio Republican to address them with his constituents directly.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has not withdrawn his endorsement of Gonzales, made last December, though Trump notably left Gonzales off a list of his Texas endorsements posted onsocial medialast week. Still, the presidentshouted outthe congressman at an event in Corpus Christi, Texas, last Friday, remarking, "Tony, congratulations."

Herrera has used the controversy to raise questions about Gonzales' character and electability. Some Texas Republicans allied with Herrera supported his calls for Gonzalez's resignation, including state Rep. Wes Virdell, whose district shares territory with the 23rd.

Pressing the attack, Herrera has leveraged a large social media following cultivated over years of conservative commentary, particularly on gun rights. His username on X is "TheAKGuy," and he boasts more than 4 million subscribers to his channel on YouTube, featuring hundreds of firearm reviews dating back to 2025.

"These texts are disgusting," Herrerawrote on X last month, reacting to revelations about Gonzales' text message to Santos-Aviles. "The question is, will Tony finally admit he's been lying this whole time? Or will he double down even though there is now undeniable proof?"

Philippine lawmakers advance impeachment of Vice President Duterte

MANILA, March 4 (Reuters) - Philippine lawmakers ordered Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday to respond to impeachment complaints against her after finding substance ‌to allegations involving unexplained wealth, the misuse of public funds and ‌making public threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte is seen as ​a frontrunner for the 2028 presidential elections, and has said she will run for the top post. She survived a similar impeachment bid last year, which the Supreme Court struck down for violating constitutional safeguards.

If convicted by the Senate at trial, Duterte would ‌be removed from office and ⁠disqualified from holding any future government position.

Duterte's defence team during the impeachment proceedings did not immediately respond to a request for ⁠comment.

Wednesday's vote in the House of Representatives' justice committee comes amid a bitter falling out between the two leaders, both scions of powerful political families, who swept to power ​in ​2022 before becoming rivals.

Before any vote on ​whether an impeachment trial should go ‌ahead, the House will consider Duterte's response to the charges, if she makes one, as well as any reply from the complainants.

The complaints against Duterte include the misuse of confidential funds, bribery and unexplained wealth, and publicly threatening to have Marcos killed, along with his wife and a cousin who was House speaker ‌at the time.

"This is a very good development ​that the process of accountability is now ​moving," Representative Leila de Lima told ​Reuters. De Lima endorsed one of the complaints against Duterte.

Four ‌impeachment complaints were initially lodged against ​Duterte, but one complaint ​was dismissed over a rule that prohibits such complaints from being filed within a year after previously being submitted. Another complaint was withdrawn to ​fast-track the proceedings and because ‌it was similar to another complaint.

Marcos survived a separate impeachment bid against him ​last month after his allies in Congress voted to dismiss it.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov broke the franchise career goals record with 220, Mats Zuccarello, Brock Faber and Quinn Hughes each had a goal and assist and the Minnesota Wild beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 Tuesday night.

Kaprizov's empty-netter, a backhander from center ice for his 35th of the season, pushed him past Marian Gaborik for the most in Wild history.

Yakov Trenin also scored to help Minnesota end a two-game slide and continue its home dominance of Tampa Bay. The Wild are 16-3-0 at home against the Lightning.

Matt Boldy added a season-high three assists, extending his points streak to a career-high-tying 10 games. Filip Gustavsson stopped 26 shots, improving to 5-1-0 in his past six starts.

Opening a four-game road trip, Tampa Bay got a goal from Nikita Kucherov but lost its third straight game after a 20-1-1 stretch. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 17 saves.

Hughes also scored in the third period, resulting in a brief "U-S-A! U-S-A-!" chant for the member of the recent gold-medal winning squad.

Trenin scored a fluky goal at 17:10 of the second period for a 3-1 Minnesota lead.

Losing the puck as he tried to split a pair of defenders in the Lightning zone, Trenin finished his drive to the net and capitalized when Vasilevskiy struggled to cover the slow sliding puck.

Just over two minutes earlier, Kucherov completed a pretty passing play with Brayden Point and Jake Guentzel to get Tampa Bay on the board.

Faber scored less than four minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Zuccarello made it 2-0 with a 4-on-3 power-play goal early in the second period, the eighth straight game Minnesota has scored with the man advantage.
