With less than 30 seconds to go, Maxey went for a steal and collided in the paint with teammate Adem Bona, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound big man.

Immediately, Maxey grabbed his right hand in pain.

The two-time All-Star guard walked off the floor with 16.2 ticks remaining, tucking his hand under his jersey as he headed toward the locker room.

The Athletic's Tony Jonesreported Saturday night that Maxey will receive additional testing on his right finger on Sunday.

"Nothing conclusive tonight,"Jones wrote on X.

Women's Day marches in Brazil decry gender-based violence, fueled by alleged gang rape in Copacabana

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Sunday's marches in Brazil forInternational Women's Dayserved as a rallying cry against gender-based violence, fueled by the latest case to outrage the country involving the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Copacabana.

APTOPIX Brazil Women's Day

The case in Rio de Janeiro'sfamed, beachside neighborhoodtook place in January, but gained national traction this week when four suspects handed themselves over to authorities. Described by police as a gang rape, it has added fuel to the fire in a nation where reports of violence against women have surged in recent months, sparkingnationwide protestsand a flurry of digital activism.

At least 15 protests were planned across the country, with organizers calling for the defense of women's lives and an end tofemicide.

Rio's Civil Police said the four young men in pretrial detention will be charged with rape, while a fifth suspect — a minor — turned himself in on Friday to face an equivalent charge under juvenile law.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for the minor after his alleged involvement in another case of sexual violence with a similar dynamic to the Copacabana episode came to light, Rio state prosecutors' office said in an email.

Lawyers for two of the suspects have denied any wrongdoing, while legal counsel for the remaining three have yet to comment on the case publicly.

A police investigation revealed that in January, the victim received a message from a classmate at her prestigious school inviting her to a friend's home. Once inside the apartment, she was taken to a room and locked in with the suspects, where she was sexually assaulted and subjected to physical and psychological violence, a Mar. 4 police statement said.

Earlier this week, security camera footage of the men arriving then leaving the scene of the alleged crime circulated widely on social media.

Public interest in the case intensified after local press widely reported that the father of one of the suspects served as undersecretary for governance and compliance within Rio's state social development and human rights department. Following the allegations against his son, the official was dismissed from his post, according to a decision published Wednesday in the state government's official gazette.

Crimes against women on the rise

OrdinaryBrazilians, women's rights groups, and public figures including ministers Anielle Franco andSônia Guajajaratook to social media to denounce the case.

"It's impossible not to feel indignation when a 17-year-old young woman suffers such brutal sexual violence," said Racial Equality minister Franco, who is the sister ofslain councilwoman Marielle Franco, as she called for mass protests on International Women's Day on March 8.

Violence against women in Brazil continues to climb, with 1,568 reported femicides in 2025 alone, a 4.7% increase from the previous year and more than three times the number in 2015, according to the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety.

Other crimes against women — such as threats, stalking, psychological violence, bodily injury, rape and attempted femicide — have also been increasing consistently in recent years, the think tank said in a report released ahead of Mar. 8.

"Women's bodies continue to be seen as someone else's territory, which can be threatened, assaulted, sexually violated and murdered," it said.

After a string of high-profile cases last year and the ensuing protests, Brazil's government increasedprotective measures. And earlier this year, the administration of PresidentLuiz Inácio Lula da Silvaannounced a multipronged effort to combat femicide involving the executive, legislative and judiciary powers.

'Rage and pain'

Earlier this week, Brazil's government introduced emergency measures that include a national task force to execute approximately 1,000 arrest warrants for known aggressors, the implementation of an electronic tracking system for individuals with protective orders and the deployment of 52 mobile units to assist women in situations of violence.

Government actions have an important symbolic value and show that authorities deem violence against women unacceptable, said Isadora Vianna, a sociology researcher from Rio de Janeiro State University. But, she added, "it would be more effective to invest massively in policies of prevention and support networks."

Vianna also noted the importance of further regulating the internet to stop the rapid circulation ofmisogynistic contentonline.

Tatianny Araújo, a 47-year-old longtime women's rights activist who has participated in more than 30 acts markingInternational Women's Day,said this year feels different for her in the wake of high-profile reports of sexual violence, including the alleged gang rape in Copacabana. Her 13-year-old son goes to the same high school as two of the suspects, who are in the process of being expelled.

"We feel bad, we cry, we're consumed by rage and by pain," Araújo said. "But at the same time we cannot stop. We have to mobilize, we have to do something."

Thousands of civilians in South Sudan flee opposition-held town after army's evacuation order

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — Thousands of civilians have fled an opposition-held town in eastern South Sudan following an evacuation order issued by the army to pave the way for a military operation, officials said Sunday.

South Sudan Conflict

The exodus from Akobo, near the border with Ethiopia, began on Saturday night.

"The town is now almost empty," said Nhial Lew, a local official in charge of humanitarian affairs. "Women, children and the elderly have left and crossed into Ethiopia."

While the government's deadline to evacuate was supposed to expire on Monday afternoon, fighting has been reported west of Akobo since Saturday.

"We are hearing the sound of machine guns approaching," Lew said on Sunday evening.

The national army, called the South Sudan People's Defense Forces, ordered the U.N. Mission in South Sudan, or UNMISS, to close its Akobo base on Friday.

Nongovernmental organizations and civilians were also asked to evacuate "in order to avoid unnecessary collateral damage," as the government prepares a military assault targeting "Akobo and surrounding areas," according to a statement by military spokesperson Lul Ruai Koang.

Akobo is one of the last strongholds of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-In Opposition, or SPLM-IO, led by Riek Machar, South Sudan's detained vice president.

A 2018 peace deal between Machar and President Salva Kiir has nearly collapsed since fighting resumed between their forces last year.

Confrontations have dramatically increased in the northern part of Jonglei since December, when opposition forces captured government outposts. They were repelled by a government counteroffensive that displaced more than 280,000 people in a few weeks.

The town of Akobo, located in the far east of South Sudan and under opposition control since the civil war that erupted in 2013, was seen as a relatively safe haven. The presence of a small contingent of U.N. peacekeepers has led more than 82,000 displaced people to seek refuge in and around Akobo.

UNMISS hasn't officially responded to the government's order to shut down its base.

Two U.N. flights evacuated most humanitarian workers on Sunday. The International Committee of the Red Cross runs a surgical unit at the Akobo County Hospital, where several wounded patients were being treated. The ICRC hadn't yet evacuated its staff.

But fear of an imminent assault on Akobo has local health authorities concerned.

"We are worried for our patients at the hospital," said Dual Diew, the Akobo County health director. "We tried to make a plan to take them to a safer location, but we don't have enough fuel."

On Saturday, civilians in Akobo demonstrated against the army's ultimatum and marched toward the U.N. base calling for peace and protection.

Mi Hyang Lee wins Blue Bay for first LPGA victory in 8 years

South Korea's Mi Hyang Lee overcame a pair of double bogeys on the front nine and recorded a birdie on the final hole to seize a one-stroke win at the Blue Bay LPGA on Sunday at Hainan Island, China.

Lee, 32, won her third LPGA title and first since capturing the 2017 Women's Scottish Open after firing a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday to finish with an 11-under 277 at the Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course.

She finished one stroke better than China's Weiwei Zhang (69 on Sunday), who failed to hold the lead after a bogey on the 17th hole.

"Still kind of a little bit shake my hands," Lee said of her nerves. "First hole make birdie, but like two double front nine and then finish 4-over so was almost give up, but my caddie just kept telling me keep fighting, fighting. I really fought by myself, just didn't give up, and then I just got to make a lot of birdies, so I think amazing. Feels amazing, yes."

Lee became only the second South Korean to win the Blue Bay LPGA, joining 2015 champion Sei Young Kim

Auston Kim (71) made three birdies over the final five holes to reside in a third-place tie with Aditi Ashok (72) of India.

"I'm proud of the three birdies that I made coming in, but it really (stinks) to play that well Thursday (67), Friday (68), and not get it done. Really frustrating," Kim said. "I hope moving forward I won't make the same mistakes that I did this week and play better."

Lee saw her three-stroke lead evaporate following double bogeys on the fifth and ninth holes before making birdies on the 10th and 13th holes.

She took advantage of Zhang's misstep on the 17th hole by hitting the pin on her third shot at the par-5 18th hole. She tapped in from 2 feet out to win the tournament.

"I just keep watching the scoreboard. I think that's why this -- that give me a lot of confidence," Lee said. "I just keep making one more birdie, two more birdie, and so it was -- yeah, just keep watching it, the scoreboard. I knew Weiwei and Rio (Takeda of Japan) play well, too."

Takeda (73), the defending champion, tied for fifth with South Koreans Hye-Jin Choi (74) and A Lim Kim (73) and China's Yu Liu (74).
