Taiwan Olympic boxing champ involved in gender debate wins first bout at Asian titles

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia (AP) — Lin Yu-ting comfortably won her first international bout since the 2024 Paris Olympics at the Asian championships on Tuesday after World Boxing said she passed agene test.

Associated Press

Taiwan's first Olympic boxing champion beat Thananya Somnuek of Thailand 5-0 in the round of 16 in the 60-kilogram division. That earned Lin a quarterfinal against division favorite Ayaka Taguchi of Japan.

The 30-year-old Lin wasn't cleared to compete at the Asian titles until less than two weeks ago.

World Boxing took over as the sport's Olympic-level governing body last year, and itimplemented a sex eligibility policylast August requiring all fighters to take a one-time genetic test designed to identify the presence of a Y chromosome.

Two-time world champion Lin qualified for the Asian championships in December by defeating compatriot Wu Shih-yi, a 60kg bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics.

But World Boxing didn't confirm Lin's eligibility until March 19, and the statement referred to her competing in only World Boxing competitions.

It is not clear whether Lin will have to undergo further gene testing if she wants to compete again at the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee announced last weeknew rulesbanning transgender athletes and a mandatory gene test once in an athlete's career.

Lin andImane Khelifof Algeriawon gold medals at Parisamid international scrutiny and misconceptions over both boxers' sex. While both met the eligibility rules followed at the time by the IOC, which ran the Paris tournament, the two fighters' success sparked a politically charged debate over those standards.

Toronto Maple Leafs fire general manager Brad Treliving

Set to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade, the Toronto Maple Leafs fired general manager Brad Treliving on Monday night, ending his tenure late in his third season in charge of one of the NHL's most popular and talked about teams.

Associated Press

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president Keith Pelley announced the abrupt change before Toronto played at Anaheim.

"Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city," Pelley said in a statement. "Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect for, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership."

It's unclear what the move means for the future of coach Craig Berube, whom Trelivinghired in May 2024.

"He gave me an opportunity here, and I feel like we let him down this year, said Berube, who won the Cup in 2019 with St. Louis.

The Leafs have not won it since 1967 and are on the verge of being eliminated from playoff contention this season. This core — led by Auston Matthews — reached the playoffs nine consecutive years but won just two series in that time.

"He cares about everyone in that locker room and everything he did to try to give us the best possible chance to compete, put us in the best position to have success," center John Tavares said. "Brad brought us all in here, (had) tremendous belief in us and we just didn't deliver. It falls on us."

Cutting ties with Treliving came just before a rematch against the Ducks, a little over two weeks since one of the touchpoints of Toronto's woeful few months.Matthews was injuredMarch 12 on a knee-on-knee hit from Radko Gudas and none of his teammates responded to a play thatincurred a five-game suspension.

Max Domi fought Gudas off the opening faceoff Monday night, and he and his teammates racked up 59 penalty minutes in the first two periods — more than any game during Treliving's time as GM. Theywon 5-4 in overtimeafter finding out not long before puck drop about news players called shocking.

"We haven't had much time to sit with it, so we're still processing it," defenseman Morgan Rielly, the team's longest-tenured player, said. "How I feel is in times like these where changes are made, it's ultimately on the players. It's a business based on results."

Treliving was hiredin May 2023 after then-president of hockey operations Brendan Shanahan fired GM Kyle Dubas.Shanahan did not have his contract renewedlast year following a second-round exit, and no one took his spot in between Pelley and Treliving in the organizational pecking order.

Shanahan, Dubas and predecessor Lou Lamoriello constructed the top of the roster, from Matthews and Tavares to Mitch Marner and William Nylander. Treliving was running the team last summer when Marner's most recent contract expired and recouped some value ina sign-and-trade with Vegasrather than losing him for nothing in free agency.

Treliving, who was in his second NHL GM job following a lengthy stint with the Calgary Flames from 2014-23, was responsible for a handful of significant moves during his tenure in Toronto. That included an ill-fated March 2025 deal for defenseman Brandon Carlo that included sending Fraser Minten and a first-round pick to Boston.

His final acts were selling movesat the most recent deadline, trading Scott Laughton to Los Angeles and Bobby McMann to Seattle.

"I think he's done a lot for this team," forward Matthew Knies said. "I think he has helped. But yeah, I think that's just kind of the way the business goes right now, and when we're not performing it starts from the top."

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam says 'we're all excited' about Deshaun Watson: He 'has a great chance'

Yahoo Sports

Without a clear No. 1 quarterback on the roster, Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is placing faith in Deshaun Watson.

Haslam addressed the embattled veteran quarterback at the NFL's owners meetings on Monday in Phoenix.

Per ESPN, Haslam is not ruling out Watson returning as Cleveland's starting quarterback next season. In fact, he said, the Browns are "excited" about the prospect.

"Deshaun has a great chance, fresh start, offensive-minded coach, who has in his past been able to work with all kinds of different quarterbacks and make them successful," Haslam told reporters, per ESPN. "So Deshaun has a great chance to do that now. We talked to him the other day, he said he weighs the [least] he has in several years.

"He's in great shape, he'll be [in Cleveland] on April 7 when we start [the offseason workout program]. Let's see what Deshaun can do. We're all excited."

Haslam's comments arrive nearly a year to the date afterhe called the acquisition of Watson a "big swing and miss."

Watson's coming off two Achilles tendon tears and hasn't played an NFL game since Week 7 of the 2024 season.

Before joining the Browns, he was one of the NFL's most promising young quarterbacks. He made three Pro Bowls with the Houston Texans from 2018 to 2020.

Browns committed to Watson despite allegations

Watson did not play in 2021 following a wave of allegations of sexual misconductand sexual assault. In total,27 women accused him of various allegations, includinggrabbing by the buttocks, exposing himself, touching them with his genitals, forcefully kissing them andforcing them to perform oral sex. The allegations stemmed mostly from massage sessions.

The Browns traded for Watson in 2022 despite the allegations and gave up a package that included three first-round picks to acquire him. They signed Watson to a fully guaranteed, five-year, $230 million contract.

Watsonhas long denied the allegations. An attorney representing his accusers announced in 2022 that 20 of 24 pending lawsuits against Watsonhad been settled out of court. The last of two known lawsuits facing Watson weredismissed in February. It's not clear if they were settled.

Watson has been bad or injured since he joined the Browns

Watson started his career in Cleveland on an 11-game NFL suspension. His play suffered upon his return to the field, and that's before he sustained multiple injuries.

Watson played six games each in 2022 and 2023 and seven in 2024 before his first Achilles tear ended his season. He posted an 80.7 quarterback rating in those games after posting a 104.5 rating in 53 games with the Texans.

What will the Browns do at QB?

The Browns have not found a viable starting quarterback since they signed Watson and have largely struggled with a group of signal-callers including Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Jameis Winston. They've done nothing so far this offseason to improve their situation at quarterback.

Watson, 30, is approaching the final year of his $230 million contract. Haslam appears intent on finding out if he has anything left.
