South Korea police seek detention warrant for BTS agency founder Bang

SEOUL, April 21 (Reuters) - South Korean police have requested a detention warrant for Bang Si-hyuk, the chairman of Kpop agency ‌HYBE, over alleged illegal trading tied to the company's initial public offering.

The Seoul ‌Metropolitan Police Agency said Bang is suspected of violating capital market laws by misleading early investors ahead of HYBE's listing and steering them to sell shares to a private equity fund linked to his associates.

Police allege that after HYBE went public the fund sold its stake and Bang received about 30% of the profits under a prior shareholder agreement, earning roughly 190 billion won ($129.1 million) ‌in illicit gains.

Bang has previously denied any wrongdoing.

A statement from HYBE citing Bang's legal counsel said on Tuesday: "We regret that a detention warrant has been sought despite our full and consistent cooperation with the investigation over an extended period.

"We will continue to cooperate with all legal procedures and make every effort to clearly explain our position," it said.

Bang is also the founder of HYBE, the music powerhouse behind global Kpop supergroup BTS.

HYBE shares reversed course after ‌the report and were down 2.4% by the market close, compared with a 2.7% rise in South Korea's benchmark KOSPI.

The National Police Agency confirmed that the U.S. embassy in Seoul recently sent a letter asking authorities to allow Bang to travel to the United States, despite a travel ban imposed during the investigation.

According to police, the letter sought a temporary ‌suspension of the ban, citing plans for Bang and other senior executives to attend an event to mark U.S. Independence Day and hold talks related to the ongoing BTS global tour.

The U.S. embassy in Seoul ‌said it did not have anything to add on that matter.

Bang has been barred from leaving South Korea since August last year.

The warrant request will be reviewed by the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office, and if prosecutors seek a detention warrant, a court ‌typically holds a hearing within two to three days to decide whether to order Bang’s arrest, according to local reports.

Bennett was named Arizona State's next coachon March 23 and Murauskas announcedWednesday on Instagramthat he will be following his coach to the desert.

“I followed my heart and chose the place where I trust the people and feel valued not just as a player, but as a person,” Murauskas wrote. “I want to finish my college journey with the people who made the last two years so amazing and helped me become who I am now as a person and a player.”

St. John's also made a big splash in the transfer portal, adding former Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman.

The 6-foot-8 Murauskas saw limited action as a freshman at Arizona before thriving in two years at Saint Mary's. The Lithuanian forward averaged 18.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a junior and twice played in the NCAA Tournament with the Gaels.

Murauskas was one of the most sought after players in the transfer portal and had several offers before deciding to join the Sun Devils. He is the first major addition for Bennett at Arizona State since he was hired to replace Bobby Hurley.

“A lot of people think decisions in the transfer portal are only about money, but for me it is about people,” he posted.

Freeman played two seasons at Syracuse, averaging 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds. The 6-9 forward averaged 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds last season, scoring at least 20 points eight times.

Freeman joins a program that won consecutive Big East championships and is coming off its first Sweet 16 run since 1999.

Reports: Mets recall Ronny Mauricio, signaling IL stint for Francisco Lindor

Francisco Lindor appears headed to the injured list with a calf strain sustained Wednesday in the New York Mets' first win in the past 12 games, with Ronny Mauricio getting the call to replace him on the roster.

Field Level Media

Mauricio is batting .293 with an OPS of .987 for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.

Lindor was heating up at the plate, but there has been nothing wrong with Mauricio's swing of late. He belted three home runs on Tuesday night to give him six in 58 at-bats in the minors this season along with five stolen bases and 13 RBIs.

Mauricio, 25, had one hit in four at-bats in a brief stint with the Mets earlier this season.

Lindor had two hits in two at-bats on Wednesday before exiting with calf tightness. He's batting .226 on the season. But Lindor was settling in over the past nine games with 11 hits in 33 at-bats to raise his average from .188.

Lindor's injury occurred in Juan Soto's first game since he went down with a calf injury against the San Francisco Giants on April 3. The Mets lost 12 consecutive games after a 4-4 start with Soto in the lineup and entered Thursday with an 8-16 record.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool gets a blue coating as Trump tackles renovation project

WASHINGTON (AP) —President Donald Trumpis having the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool coated in a swimming pool surface hued in “American flag blue,” covering up a decades-old granite surface that he said was “leaking like a sieve” and would take years to replace.

Associated Press

The president announced the renovation at an Oval Office event Thursday, saying the coating had already begun. He was inspired to tackle the project after a friend visited from Germany and lamented that the water was filthy and looked disgusting, Trump said.

“And I went over there with Secret Service in tow, and I said, isn’t that a shame? That’s terrible,” Trump said, showing reporters a photo of the site as it undergoes work.

The project is one more makeover refashioning the nation’s capital to Trump’s liking, following others such as the demolition of the White House's East Wing to make roomfor a new ballroom.

Lined with stately elm trees between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, the reflecting pool is one of the most iconic sites in the capital. It’s where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.

In Trump’s telling, the reflection pool project is a case study in business acumen. The president said he scrapped plans to have the granite replaced, which he said was estimated to cost $301 million and would take at least three years.

Instead, Trump said he called a few pool contractors he knows from past real estate projects — “I have a guy who’s unbelievable at doing swimming pools up the road,” Trump said.

The president went with a plan to clean the granite and lay down a new “industrial grade pool” surface for $1.5 million, he said. All told, it would take a few weeks. Trump noted it would be ready well before July 4, when the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence.

Trump brought up the project unprompted and spoke about it for several minutes at a White House event on efforts to reduce drug prices. He said he initially wanted a turquoise-colored surface “like in the Bahamas” but was sold when a contractor suggested “American flag blue.”

“You’re going to end up with a beautiful, beautiful reflecting pool,” Trump said, “the way it’s supposed to be, much better than it ever was.”
