The California Legislature has honored Kermit with an official proclamation from the state. Kermit was recently presented with the honor at The Muppets Studio headquarters in Glendale, Calif., by the Honorable Nick Schultz of California's 44th Assembly District. The honor celebrates 70 years since Kermit's 1955 television debut inSam and Friendson a local Washington, D.C., area news program. Kermit was created and performed by the late Jim Henson and was originally made from his mother's coat and a ping pong ball cut in half for his eyes. Over the years, Kermit has become known as the ringleader for The Muppets, alongside dear friends Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, Rowlf, Animal and more. The group also celebrates its 70th anniversary this month. In a statement about the milestone moment, Kermit tells PEOPLE, "On this day in 1955 our trademark brand of gentle chaos first burst onto the scene thanks to our friends, Jim and Jane Henson. Hard to believe we've been singing, and dancing, and making people happy for that many years." He continues, "Speaking for all The Muppets, I just want to say how much we appreciate the lovers, the dreamers, and all the fans like you."
