- *Avatar 3*, officially titled *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, is the third entry in James Cameron's sweeping sci-fi saga.
- The film introduces a menacing, fire-wielding clan of Na'vi that live in the shadow of an active volcano.
- It hits theaters on Dec. 19, 2025.
James Cameron's *Avatar* franchise is nothing if not ambitious, with each new entry in the sci-fi saga unveiling heretofore unseen tribes, creatures, and ecosystems.
"Each movie will introduce audiences to new biomes," producer Jon Landau previously told **. "Each movie is going to introduce audiences to new clans, new cultures on Pandora. Once we introduce a character, they stay a part of the ongoing evolution. We just add to it."**
After submerging us in the aquatic wonders of *The Way of Water*, Cameron is gearing up to transport audiences to a darker, more ominous corner of Pandora with *Avatar 3*. As its official title implies, *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, the third film in what's planned to be a five-part franchise, introduces a dangerous, ash-sprinkled clan that resides in the shadow of an active volcano.
With the film's first trailer making the rounds, anticipation is sure heating up. Before donning your 3D specs, read on for everything we know about *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, from its release date and cast to its trailer and plot details.**

As with the first two films, *Avatar: Fire and Ash* will center around Sam Worthington's Jake Sully and Zoe Saldaña's Neytiri, this time following the pair as they mourn their late son, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), who died during *The Way of Water*'s climactic battle.
As Worthington previously teased to EW, Neteyam's death serves to activate a fighter's spirit in Jake, who's been trying to abstain from battle. "Jake's been living with the Navi for 10 years now," he said. "The idea is to lean into that primal aspect a bit more, and that's just something that I'm going keep developing over the saga."
*Fire and Ash* will also serve to broaden Pandora by introducing two new Na'vi tribes. There's the fierce and dangerous "Ash People," who are said to have "forsaken" the Na'vi deity Eywa, but there's also the Wind Traders, a peaceful community who travel the skies in what early concept art depicts as massive ships pulled by floating turtle-like creatures.

But there are more stories afoot. Remember Spider (Jack Champion), the human orphan taken in by Jake and Neytiri? Well, *Fire and Ash* will see him reunite with his estranged father, Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), the late RDA baddie who was reborn in a Na'vi "recombinant" body. At the end of* The Way of Water*, Spider saved Quaritch from death, speaking to a complicated relationship for the pair.
"[Spider] gets smashed together with the bad father, so to speak, but they recognize each other in a weird way and start to chum around, at least a little bit, until he really sees Quaritch at his worst, interrogating the people in the village, threatening to kill them and so on," Cameron told us. "Then he recoils from that tentative relationship formation."
"They reconnect out of necessity," Lang told *Empire *in June 2025. "Spider confuses Quaritch. But Quaritch wants clarity. There is something about Spider that Quaritch really loves — not a word we associate with him. I think respect and admiration really develop in spades, as well as animosity and manipulation. The relationship will deepen — for better or worse."

Cameron touched on some of the film's weightier themes when speaking with EW at D23 last year. "It took a long time to come up with a title that I felt resonated with what's in the film," he said. "I don't think I could say too much about it until you actually see the film and you see what it means, but if you think of fire as hatred, anger, violence, that sort of thing, and ash is the aftermath. So what's the aftermath? Grief, loss, right? And then what does that cause in the future? More violence, more anger, more hatred. It's a vicious cycle."**
The filmmaker added that he doesn't find *Fire and Ash* to be a "dark film," saying, "I think it goes to darker places than the previous ones did, but it's still obviously this open, glorious, grand adventure, which is what we aspire to do every time we set out. But we're not afraid to go into the dark places of our characters, which I think is also good. I think that's also what people really feel they want when they get to know a character well, either through a series or whatever it is that they follow. They want to know more. They want to know more about them, find out what their limits are, so to speak. And we do that."**
Who's in the Avatar: Fire and Ash cast?
'Avatar: The Way of Water'. 20th Century Studios
One of the most important new characters joining the *Avatar* franchise is Varang, the fierce leader of the Ash People. Varang is played by Oona Chaplin, a veteran of series such as *Sherlock* (2012), *Game of Thrones* (2012–2013), and *Black Mirror* (2014).
Clad in a red headdress and smeared in ash, Varang can wield fire painlessly — and uses that to her benefit in battle with the Na'vi.
Cameron spoke about Varang in a January 2025 interview with *Empire*. "Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that," he said. "She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil."
Speaking with EW at D23, Landau elaborated on the importance of a character like Varang in the *Avatar* franchise. "There are good humans, and there are bad humans. It's the same thing on the Na'vi side," Landau said. "Oftentimes, people don't see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren't aware of."**

Also joining the cast is English actor David Thewlis, who's likely best known to Western audiences as Remus Lupin in the *Harry Potter* franchise (2004–2011), though you may also recognize him from his recent turns on Netflix series *The Sandman* (2022) and *Kaos* (2024). Thewlis will play Peylak, a member of the Wind Traders.
Returning cast members joining Worthington, Saldaña, Lang, and Champion include Kate Winslet's Ronal and Cliff Curtis' Tonowari, the leaders of the Metkayina, as well as the Na'vi children played by Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, and Bailey Bass.

Sigourney Weaver will also reprise her role as Kiri, the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri. "She's a character who's a true sensitive," Cameron told EW of the character in November 2022. "She's a person who's very connected to the world around them, far beyond a normal Na'vi — to the animals, to the plants, and to the rhythm and balance of life."
"Kiri's origins are a bit complicated and mysterious," Weaver added.**
Is there an Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer?
Yes, the first trailer for *Avatar: Fire and Ash* debuted before screenings of Marvel's *The Fantastic Four: The First Steps*.
The trailer serves to properly introduce Verang, and to tease a battle between Jake and Neytiri and the Ash People. It also offers our first proper look at the sky-faring Wind Traders. The RDA's presence is also felt, with a shot of an apprehended Jake being marched through a military base.
